What is Structured Data?

Schema and Structured Data

Structured data is a way to mark up and annotate content on a website in a way that makes it easier for search engines and other software to understand the meaning and context of that content. This helps search engines quickly understand the content, pick up important information it needs and associate this information with other websites and information sources.

Structured data is implemented using a standardised syntax called "schema markup," which is a set of tags and attributes that can be added to HTML or other markup languages to provide additional information about the content on a website.

There are a number of different types of schema markup that can be used, each of which is designed to provide information about a specific type of content. Currently Schemai provides generators and information on the following schema markup types:

One of the main benefits of using structured data and schema markup is that it can help improve the visibility of a website in search engine results. This is because search engines can use the information provided in the structured data to understand the content of a website more clearly, which can in turn help to improve the relevance and accuracy of search results.

For example if you have a product page, then providing structured data markup in the code for this page will present search engines with the most important information; the price, the quantity, the SKU etc. concisely, meaning the search engine spider can quickly get the information and move on.

Another benefit of structured data is it allows search engines to show more detailed information in the search results, such as review ratings, prices, events, and even images, giving users more information and motivation to click on a website. It also makes it easier for the website to show up on Google's Rich Results, Google Feature Snippets, Google Knowledge Graph and in Google's other visual search systems such as Google Images and Google Videos.

When it comes to implementing schema markup, there are a few different ways to go about it. One approach is to manually add the structured data to the HTML of a website using the appropriate tags and attributes. This can be time-consuming and requires a good understanding of both the schema markup and the website's code, but it also gives you a high degree of control over how the structured data is implemented.

If you aren’t sure how to add this information, take a look at our generators.

Once you have added the structured data to your website, it’s important to validate that the structured data is implemented correctly to ensure it is being read by the search engines and not causing any issues. Google and Bing both provide tools for validating the structured data on a website.
